Alexandria Presbyterian Church:

Secrete Christmas Angels deliver 5 gifts to individuals that need a special remembrance during the holidays. There is a gift of each Sunday in Advent and one for Christmas. The last gift is usually accompanied by a special visit between the youth and the person they have been supporting. This is the 7th year of the project by the Jr, Sr. High Class.

Saturday, December 14th a Family Birthday Party for Jesus. the party is 1 1/2 hours long and will include a craft, games, and caroling around our outside manger scene. It is here that Santa Clause will be found praying at the manger. Santa will then come into the church with us and join us in eating birthday cake and passing out birthday presents.

Also, Saturday, December 14th the fruit, cookies and other items will be placed in boxes to be distributed to all shut ins and individuals that need a special cheer during the holiday season. Included this year will be "soups in a jar" which are ingredients found in a pint jar to make chicken noodle soup -- this project was done by the youth of the church.

On December 22nd the Youth and Adults will be performing Operation Christmas Child the Musical during our worship time. This story is based on the mission project sponsored by Samaritan's Purse and is an absolute wonderful production. If anyone is interested in coming to the performance it will begin at 11 am...also if anyone is interested our church as purchased the CDs, play and directors book/video and we would be willing to loan it out next year. (Contact me for details.)

A regular
Taizé Prayer Service being held in our church sanctuary, State College Presbyerian Church, each Wednesday evening, and to invite any interested members of your congregation to attend.

The Taizé community was started by a young Christian, now known affectionately as Brother Roger, during the early half of the last century. Brother Roger and a few close friends started praying regularly together morning, noon, and night in the attic of his home. Connected with their commitment to prayer was an eagerness to care for the poor and become involved in regular service in the world after the example of Christ. Soon others became interested in their simple way and their community began to grow. Today, thousands of people, young and old, come to pray regularly with the Brothers of Taizé. The Brothers are now an ecumencal community including Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants from nearly every major denomination world-wide. They continue to work for reconciliation among all people, support the unity of the Church, and reach out regularly to the poorest of the earth and others affected by war and helplessness around the world.

Our congregation hopes by observing services in our own community that we, too, can draw closer to God and be inspired to care for one another and others in need around us. The Taizé services are free from formal liturgy, consisting of simple songs (easily learned), and an extended time of silence. We meet at 5:00 on Wednesday evenings for about 45 minutes in the front area of our sanctuary.
Below is a suggested announcement. Please consider posting this information somewhere appropriate and publicizing these events in your newsletter and/or weekly services. If you have any questions you are welcome to give me a call.
Sincerely,

Joel T. Blunk

CREATIVE WORSHIP

The Upper Spruce Creek church traditionally has a
Thanksgiving Eve Service followed by a time of fellowship with finger foods brought by the members. The service consists of Thanksgiving hymns, Scripture readings , prayer and a meditation based on a Thanksgiving theme. We emphasize the participation of the members in all parts of the service.

One year the theme was thankfulness. Members were given colored paper leaves on which they wrote one thing for which they were thankful. At a given point we went forward and hung the leaves on a tree placed on the chancel. A compilation of the statements on the leaves was made and handed out later.

Another year the theme was how we used the talents and gifts that we were given. Examples of knitting, sewing, painting, baking and many others were brought in. A nurse brought her stethoscope .

The story of the ten lepers was told by the leader while walking among the congregation. We were then asked to meditate and get inside the minds of Jesus and the ten lepers . How did Jesus feel? Why did the one leper return? Why didn't the nine and think of the excuses they might they have made ? What excuses do we make for not giving thanks?

The history of Thanksgiving in our country was explored followed by how Jesus and his family celebrated the Feast of Booths.

This year the emphasis will be on God’s gift of hands. There will be four readers and a leader alternating statements and Scripture readings on hands.Folowing the readings there will be a guided meditation as we imagine God molding us and shaping us and our reaching out to touch God’s hands.
