Krislund Camp

Krislund Korner

• Calling all carpenters, drywallers, painters and electricians. Camp Krislund is in full-blown building mode. The new 20 room Adult-Family Lodge is scheduled to start construction in late November using mostly volunteers labor. There is a more immediate need. The Croda House is a new building that has been erected and Camp Krislund needs our help to complete that building. Once completed the current office will move from the Brown House to the Croda house. The Brown house will then be used to house volunteers who will be working on the Adult/Family Lodge. All of that has to happen before construction starts on the Adult/Family Lodge. If you can join us any time during the next few weeks, call Dan Alex at 691-1471(h) 717-599-4283(cell) or email danalex@comcast.net.

• Please consider making Krislund Camp Adult/Family Lodge your volunteer mission project in 2008. Sign up now for this exiting new era in the life of Krislund.

(an email to the churches:)

Good Morning,

My name is Dan Alex. I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Krislund Camp Adult/Family Lodge.

We are adding a 20 room hotel style lodge onto the RC.

If the Final Land Development Plan is approved by the end of November we may be able to start building the 2nd week in December after the excavating is done.

There are a few things we need to be accomplished by then. They are outlined in the Bulletin Insert.

We hope that each chuch will be able to take part in a Mission work group to help build this exciting new project!

Any questions or concern, please contact:

Newsletter # 4, April 30, 2008

Welcome
Between the Spring Work Day coming up this weekend and the Open House on May 17, 2008 Krislund is getting ready for its busiest time of the year. In only 6 weeks, the first campers arrive for an unforgettable week of camp experience. Until then, there is a lot that still needs to be done. The number of registered campers is approaching the 350-mark, which means that in order to reach our goal of a total of 800 campers, we still have a long way to go. To achieve this, we need your help!!! Please keep encouraging children and youth in your church, school, and other organizations to come to camp this summer. With your help and support, Krislund will be able to touch hundreds of lives this summer!

Special Requests and Job Openings
The staffing situation is looking very good right now. We are especially excited about seeing some alumni staff return this year, and we are sure that combined with the new faces on the staff team, Krislund will have a strong spiritual base for this summer. The few remaining open positions still needing filled are:
Lifeguard (18 years and older)
Maintenance person (18 years and older), experience with machinery and valid driver's license are required; must be able to lift heavy loads and work extended hours
Two male senior counselors (19 years and older)
One male and two female assistant counselors (16-18 years old)

Application forms can be downloaded on www.krislund.org. For more information contact the Krislund office at 814-422-8878.

Spring Open House

Focus on Carlisle
This issue's focus is on the Carlisle Presbytery. Carlisle has registered a total of 116 campers. On the right you can see what churches have registered five or more campers for this summer. The churches sending the most campers from Carlisle Presbytery are St. Andrew Presbyterian and Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. Way to go!
The next Krislund Hot Sheet will focus on Northumberland Presbytery.

The total number of registered campers is now 335, with a little more than a month left before summer camps begin. The number of campers from Carlisle Presbytery (116) has exceeded registrations from Northumberland or Huntingdon Presbyteries. There are also more campers registered from regions outside of Pennsylvania. Seven campers are coming from Maryland and from Virginia. Campers from Florida and Utah probably have the longest journey. We are still far from this year's goal of 800 registered campers for the summer, so we need your help encouraging more kids to come to camp this summer.

April Edition

Mountain Pies, Campfire Pizza, and S’mores
Hearty appetites after a full day of fun and great food cooked over a campfire are just two of the unforgettable memories of Christian camping. Last summer’s campers gave a score of 4.4 out of 5 for camp food. Sign up now for a whole week of memories.

Water Balloons, Squirt Guns, & Plenty of Water
New this summer will be the Squirt and Splash Field for campers of all ages. Imagine a hot day with spring-water-filled balloons and launchers and lots of room in which to get wet and have fun. Another good reason to sign up your child, grandchild, or neighbor a week of spiritual growth, friendships, and fun.

Goodbye Tepees / Hello Navajo Hogans
Have you slept in a tepee during a rainstorm? That is why we’re replacing them with waterproof-covered log hogans this summer. Campouts for 3rd-6th graders will now be available regardless of weather on top of the Krislund Mountain. Nearby restrooms and a perfect star gazing landing make this a time to talk and reflect on God’s amazing creativity and blessings.

Counselor Watch
Krislund is on the lookout for loving summer counselor candidates and lifeguard(s). Asst. counselors must be 16 years of age and senior counselors may be 18 or older. Paid positions are available for persons willing to give all or part of their summer to serving Christ and loving campers. Go to www.krislund.org to download an application or call 814.422.8878.

May Events: Work Day & Open House
The semiannual WORKDAY will soon be here: Saturday, May 3; 8:30-4:00. Families and individuals are needed to help us get ready for the summer by painting putting up wagon and tent canvas, cleaning, hauling, and organizing. The more the merrier. Spring OPEN HOUSE will be on Saturday, May 17, from 1-6:00. Wagon rides, basketball, kite flying, wall climbing, tours, summer registration booth, and an outdoor picnic are some of the fun. Contact the office for more information or to register your attendance at either or both events.

For Church Staff & Spouses Only
Get out and get back to the basics on a BEGINNER BACKPACK TRIP, Ap. 23-25. No experience and minimum equipment is needed. Hike a small section of the Appalachian Trail in PA. with Steve Cort and enjoy God’s beauty and Presence.

Winter Thaw Edition

Now’s the Time to Sign
Are you planning your spring break? Have you begun to think about your summer? Make a week at Krislund a high priority. The pool, zip line, cable swings, new soccer field, archery, climbing wall, and arts and crafts are just a small part of the fun. Go online and download a summer schedule and application. Sign up now for a great time at Krislund.

Leave the Screen; Play in the Green
“My child is not the outdoors-type. He/she would rather watch TV or play their video games than mess around in the woods.” Many experts agree: the disconnect between children and nature is growing wider and deeper. That is too bad considering the positive impact of God’s creation on concentration, self-confidence, and environmental sensitivity. Even more importantly, God’s creation ignites spiritual interest and growth. Join us this summer.

Summer Staff Search; Be A Missionary
Enter the culture of 21st century youth, love the people, and carry the Good News of Christ in your daily interactions. Available jobs include counselors, audio-visual and computer team, lifeguard, and adventure leaders. Go to our website to download job descriptions, an application, and reference forms.

I Like to Work With My Hands….
Krislund has projects waiting for people like you. Renovations on the Brown House and Lower Lodge, constructing luggage shelters and cookout tarp pavilions are just a few of the tasks waiting for people to come and complete. In most cases, the materials and tools are already here; all we need is your skill and time. Interested persons are asked to contact the Mission Coordinator, Dan Alex, at danalex@comcast.net to talk details and to schedule a visit. Make the camp stronger by giving of your talents and time.

Building is Not My Gift; But I Love to Help
Adults can directly improve a life by giving a camp scholarship. A needy child can attend a week at Krislund with the gift of $300. Individuals, church school classes, and church groups are invited to share in the joy of sending a child to camp. Contact the office for more information on the “Adopt A Camper” opportunities. Adults can also impact children and youth by volunteering a week at Krislund, serving in the kitchen, on maintenance, in the store, or as assistant counselors. Give us a call to learn more or to sign up for a week.

Arts & Crafts: History and Fun in One
American folk toys will be the focus of this summer’s craft program. Discover, create, and return home with a handmade toy or game. Come to camp.

Winter Wonderland Edition

It’s Summer Time at Krislund
There may be snow on the ground and our woodstoves are burning, BUT we’re thinking and preparing for a great summer of camps and ministry. You can start experiencing summer too by registering your child or grandchild for a time of hot adventure and spiritual growth this summer. Go online to look at summer schedule and 21 camp offerings; download an application too. Remember, Krislund is for everyone!

Concerns Grow about Average Lifespan
Researchers believe the long standing trend of increased average life spans in the United States may not last. “The new lack of childhood activity and its extra pounds can lead to adult-onset diabetes and can actually shorten average lifespan from three to five years.” Unfortunately, statistics reveal outdoor recreation in the U.S. also going down, adding to concerns about the health of our children. “Go, play outside!” is not only traditional advice, it is God’s recommendation too. Krislund is a spiritual playground; come and join us this summer

Give a Week / Change a Life
Grownups can come to camp too! More than fifty adult volunteers served last summer in the kitchen, on maintenance, in the camp store, at arts and crafts, and as assistant counselors. They gave and received the joy of watching lives changed. Call the camp for more information. Housing is provided in the Lower Lodge and two RV hookups are available.

New Lodge Construction: Problem or God’s Provision?
A new construction regulation and permitting delays have moved construction of the new lodge to August. Fortunately, summer camps will now not be affected by construction, mission group scheduling will be broadened, and building costs are approaching their lowest level in years. The extra time will also allow remodeling of the Brown House into the Mission House for individuals and groups. Interested persons are asked to contact the Lodge Mission Coordinator, Dan Alex, at danalex@comcast.net.

They Need Your Help
Forty seven children and youth from inner-city Harrisburg hope to attend Krislund this summer. Their families are unable to send them, but scholarships ($300) from generous individuals and churches can bring them to camp. Consider this: six persons giving $10 from now to June can send one child to camp for a week. For more information, contact the camp.

December Edition

The “Gentle Whisper”
Elijah discovered God, not in the spectacular wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a “gentle whisper” (1Kings 19:11ff). Our loud and hectic culture misses, but deeply needs, the gentle whisper of God’s Presence revealed once in a manger. Krislund seeks to be a place where hard-of-hearing people of all ages may listen and follow the Word made flesh. Thank you for your partnership in this ministry of Good News.

FtF Benchmark Reached / Goal Achievable
The Funding the Future (FtF) capital campaign reached the October 27th benchmark of 1.5million dollars in pledges and gifts. Less than one quarter of the two million dollar goal remains. Churches and individuals are needed to complete this vision for spreading the Gospel and bringing renewal to all ages at Krislund. Please contact Steve Cort at 814.422.8878 or e-mail info@krislund.org in order to participate. (Ask how your donation/pledge can be designated as a Christmas gift in someone’s honor.) Thank you.

To Build It, They Must Come
The new adult and family lodge site is poised for excavation at the end of November. Very soon there will be immediate need for strong backs, willing hands, and skilled workers to help build the foundation, walls, and roof of this impressive structure. Individuals and church work groups are asked to contact our Lodge Mission Group Coordinator, Dan Alex (717.599.4283 or danalex@comcast.net) for more work information and to schedule time(s) to come. Accommodations are available.

’08 Summer Camp; Now’s the Time to Schedule
Old and familiar, new and different are all available in the 21camps of 2008. Camp info and application are on our website, www.krislund.org. Go to “summer program” and click on the picture to download the brochure. Look below for “What’s New.”

What’s New this Summer?
The new lodge design has prompted the need for a lake. A two-acre lake will be ready for canoeing this summer. Since this lake will cover the eastern portion of the field across from the Retreat Center, a new 150x150yard recreation field has been prepared below the Mini Adventure Play area. Soccer and large group games will be held here. Look for more “What’s New” information in January’s Korner.

Cooks: The Search is On
Our special cook, Carol Gipe, retired at the end of the summer and returned home to be near family, especially grandchildren. Krislund is looking for part time cook(s) for our off-season program (primarily weekends) and for a head cook for the summer. Experience cooking for large groups is necessary; ServSafe certification will be funded by the camp. Contact Sharon at the camp office for more information.

Groups or individuals, day-only or overnights, skilled or unskilled; let Krislund be your church’s mission site this year. An on-site mission manager will assist volunteers and provide materials, beginning in November. All are welcome, please RSVP if planning to eat or climb by 10/24.

Introducing Lauren Robinson
Lauren is a member of Lewisburg Presbyterian and served as last summer’s capable Program Director. With her church’s support, Lauren is providing program and outreach assistance. Gifted with a superb singing voice and an engaging style, Lauren enjoys visiting churches to talk about Krislund. Call the camp office to schedule a visit.

Mothers Retreat, November 2-4

Funding the Future Campaign Tops 1.4 Million
The Camp’s capital campaign began earlier this year with a goal of $2,000,000. The adult-friendly lodge, reduction of land purchase debt, an indoor recreation building, and renovations to the Upper Lodge and cabins are the focus of the campaign. We are thankful for the generosity of churches and individuals. Anyone wishing to know more about how to participate is encouraged to call Steve Cort at 814.422.8878 or e-mail stevecort@krislund.org. Thank you.
